Summer Orientation

June marked the beginning of New Student Orientation, where incoming Iowa State University students get the opportunity to visit campus and familiarize themselves with campus, academic programs, residence halls, and involvement opportunities before starting classes in the fall. This is a time to welcome these new students to campus as they work through the transition from high school to university life.

Diann Burright, director of undergraduate student services, said, “Summer Orientation brings a different type of energy to our office and campus overall. Students are eager to start their new pathways as college students and are in anticipation of what’s to come. It is fun to be able to take part in this process alongside them and their families.”

This year, Ivy College of Business is welcoming 951 first-year students, 242 transfer students, and 40 international students. During June, there are nine in-person OnCyte Orientation sessions for first-year students, each ranging from 80-90 students. In July and August, there are 11 course registration dates for students who completed online orientations.

During orientation, incoming students are led by a team of Cyclone Aides, current Iowa State undergraduate student leaders. Cyclone Aides are the first people new students interact with on campus, so creating a positive and welcoming environment is essential as they guide new students and their families through orientation sessions.

“Being one of the first Ivy students that new students ever meet at Iowa State gives me a sense of motivation to give the best experience possible to let them know of all the opportunities within the Ivy College of Business,” explained Ryan Willman, a Cyclone Aide and a sophomore in supply chain management and international business.

The Ivy community is excited to welcome all new students continuing their academic journeys.
