David Spalding reappointed to his third, five-year term
David Spalding, Raisbeck Endowed Dean of the Debbie and Jerry Ivy College of Business, has been reappointed to his third, five-year term. He was hired in 2013 and had his first reappointment in 2018.

Spalding, the fifth dean of the college, has experienced numerous achievements during his second term. These include completing a 45,000-square-foot addition to the Gerdin Business Building, securing a $50 million gift to name the college, growing graduate enrollment and faculty numbers, establishing several new academic programs responsive to student and employer demand, and leading the college through a successful reaccreditation in 2019.
“David Spalding has transformed the Ivy College of Business during his 10 years as dean,” said Iowa State President Wendy Wintersteen. “He has engaged students, alumni, and Iowa’s business community to create an exceptional educational experience that prepares graduates for successful careers across a wide range of fields and sets a high bar for peers across the nation.”
In addition to his role as dean, Spalding has served as interim vice president for economic development and industry relations at Iowa State University since July 2018. Wintersteen has permanently appointed Spalding to this position, effective September 1, pending approval by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.

Before joining Iowa State in 2013, he served for eight years at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, most recently as senior vice president and senior advisor to Dartmouth’s president. Before entering higher education, Spalding had a 29-year career in finance in New York, New York. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth and his MBA from New York University.

Additional achievements under Spalding’s leadership:
- Successfully operated during the COVID pandemic, shifting 334 sections online after spring break 2020. In a survey, Ivy faculty were more likely to say that they relied on college resources to do this successfully.
- Increased the number of undergraduate majors from nine to 14.
- Increased the number of master’s degrees from four to eight.
- Increased graduate enrollment by 30.7 percent from fall 2017 to fall 2021.
- Successfully launched an executive MBA (EMBA) focused on food, agriculture, and biosystems. It is the only EMBA program in Iowa.
- Hired 40 tenured/tenure-eligible faculty bringing us to a total of 91 tenured/tenure-eligible faculty in fall 2022.
