Student Spotlight
Brett McGee, a junior in finance and accounting from Neola, Iowa, spent his summer as a data and statistics intern with the New York Federal Reserve Bank in Manhattan, New York.
“I worked with the team that handles weekly balance sheet-related reports from the largest banks in District 2. The reports contain key information and are shared with the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) for monetary policy implementation.”
McGee has always been excited about the world of finance, and his time at Ivy has provided opportunities for his passion to expand and flourish. While pursuing finance and accounting, McGee makes time to participate in Ivy organizations as a member of the Wall Street Club and vice president of the ISU Investment Group. He has also had the opportunity to participate in numerous competitions, utilizing his professors’ knowledge of bank operations.
With his academic course load and various involvements, McGee’s schedule doesn’t allow for much free time. However, he still tries an effort to keep a healthy balance in his everyday life.
“In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my roommates and other friends. This involves making food, watching sports, or hanging out and listening to music. I also enjoy reading up on topics I have questions about/am interested in, like healthcare and baseball sabermetrics.”
While considering internship opportunities for the summer, McGee’s eyes were set on New York. Through entry-level economic courses and even from watching the news, he was led to the New York Federal Reserve, eventually deciding to apply on their website.
“The location played a huge factor in my decision. Being exposed to the financial hub of the world, even for a summer, can have major career benefits. I also enjoyed working with G-SIBS (Globally Systemically Important Banks) on a macroeconomic level.”

“I was exposed to regulatory reporting of large banks in New York, New Jersey, and Puerto Rico. I had direct contact with bankers at the largest financial institutions in the world. The reports my team processed were sent to multiple destinations, such as the research team and FOMC, and frame monetary policy decisions.”
