Meet Tim Su

Student spotlight

Tim Su Tim Su is a PhD candidate specializing in information systems and business analytics. Su received his bachelor of science in electronic information science and technology from Shandong University, master of science in telecommunication circuit and system from Beijing University, and MBA from the College of William and Mary’s Mason School of Business, prior to joining Iowa State University’s PhD program. He has 10 years of work experience as a patent attorney and patent analyst.

Q: Why did you decide to get a PhD in information systems and business analytics (ISBA)?

I decided to pursue my PhD because of the remarkable reputation and placement record of the ISBA PhD program at the Ivy College of Business. Additionally, the research productivity of the ISBA faculty was a major drawing point.

Q: How did you choose the Ivy College of Business? Please share any specific points that helped you decide.

The choice of the Ivy College of Business was heavily influenced by the program coordinator. They were very kind and responsive during the application process, ensuring that I received all of the information needed to make the decision.

Q: What types of research are you most interested in?

The research that I am most interested in, is the theory-driven empirical research about the impact of IT on a firm’s innovation strategy using second-hand data.

Q: Would you encourage future PhD students to apply at Ivy? Please explain why.

Yes, because the Ivy ISBA PhD program provides great flexibility to a PhD student. The program gives PhD students the opportunity to do research in any area and use any research method they like.

Q: What is your dream job after you complete your PhD?

Following the completion of my PhD, my dream job is a tenure track assistant professor at a research university in the U.S.
