Student internship series

Students at the Debbie and Jerry Ivy College of Business learn early in their college career the added value of having an internship before graduation.

Avery SmithOver the summer, Ivy students engaged in a wide range of internships to add real-world experience to their resumes before they graduate. Meet Avery Smith, who shared why a summer internship added value to her education.

Smith, a sophomore from Forest City, Iowa, studying marketing and event management, spent her summer as an advertising and media relations intern with Cambridge Investment Research, Inc. in Fairfield, Iowa.

As the advertising and media relations intern, Smith was involved in many projects, including assisting the team with local and national sponsorships and advertising. She researched information and wrote up proposals for the best advertising and sponsorship opportunities, then helped coordinate deliverables. Working with others on the team was crucial to ensure all deadlines were met and every component was complete.

Cambridge has an internship program called The Next Step that highlights the importance of using an internship as a learning opportunity. Through this program, Smith was able to job shadow anyone in the company to learn their responsibilities on a daily basis. The design of The Next Step program allowed Cambridge interns to be immersed in the company culture immediately and gain industry knowledge.

“Get out of your comfort zone and do the scary and hard things. The only way for you to grow is to be uncomfortable.”

Smith found this internship position on the Iowa State University CyHire website, and after researching the company, she created a connection with Cambridge at the university’s career fair. She was drawn to how The Next Step internship program is a curated learning experience with mentors, free training, job shadows, and more.

“Get out of your comfort zone and do the scary and hard things,” said Smith to others planning to pursue an internship. “It’s easy to let fear take over and decide where you’re at. The only way for you to grow is to be uncomfortable. If I had not practiced going through nerve-wracking interviews, meetings, elevator pitches, etc., I wouldn’t be gaining this valuable experience at a great company and putting myself a step ahead for the rest of my career.”
