The doctoral specialization in finance* will prepare you for academic research and teaching careers. We emphasize rigorous training and hands-on experience.

Five semesters of coursework include a firm grounding in economic theory, thorough training in statistics and econometrics, and immersion in corporate finance, investments, and financial institutions.

As a student in the finance specialization, you will prepare to become future faculty through participation in:

  • doctoral coursework in the major, a related minor, and associated research tools
  • joint research projects with finance faculty
  • doctoral dissertation research, which is supervised by the finance faculty and funded by the college

As a doctoral student, you will also teach undergraduate courses in finance.

Successful students develop close working relationships with finance faculty, both in the classroom and through co-authored research. You are expected to publish your first research study before finishing the program, and to obtain jobs at universities rated “high” or “very high” in research activity by the Carnegie Foundation.

For more information about the finance specialization curriculum and research opportunities, contact Paul Koch.

* Please note that the finance specialization will next admit students for the fall 2026 semester.

Lezgin Ay

The finance faculty ensured we understood the importance of research from day one. By the time I graduated, I had a couple of well-developed projects, some under review at top journals.
