The Debbie and Jerry Ivy College of Business at Iowa State University will offer an undergraduate certificate in risk management and insurance beginning in the fall 2025 semester.
Available to all Iowa State students, regardless of your field of study, this certificate is designed to deepen your understanding of personal and corporate risk management and the insurance industry. It’s perfect if you want to work in the insurance industry, but do not want to become an actuary.
This program will lay a strong foundation in the area of risk management and insurance so you will have a marketable skill set on top of your primary degree. If you’re interested in risk management and insurance, this certificate help you stand out to employers.
This certificate seeks to deliver three related learning outcomes. You will:
- Understand why insurance markets exist and how they function.
- Understand how insurance companies are structured.
- Understand the various roles that exist in insurance companies and related financial institutions.
- Be competitive in filling these various roles.

Requirements
Risk management and insurance certificate
The four required courses (two general finance and two in risk management and insurance) are regularly offered by the department. In addition, you will need to take three additional electives from a substantial list of offerings in finance, accounting, economics, actuarial science, math, marketing, statistics, entrepreneurship, management, or health care management.

This new certificate clearly demonstrates to employers that you have deliberately acquired a valuable skill set in risk management and insurance.
