Business students have more internship opportunities in healthcare

Unity-Point-logoThere are more options now for business students who want real-world experience in healthcare management, thanks to a new partnership between the Debbie and Jerry Ivy College of Business and UnityPoint Health in Des Moines.

The two organizations signed a memorandum of understanding, effective August 1, to help students combine their passions for business and healthcare and open the door to paid healthcare management internships during college.

This is the second partnership agreement between the Ivy College of Business and an area hospital. In March, the college announced a partnership with Mary Greeley Medical Center, which allows business students to participate in healthcare management internships at a nationally ranked, high-performing hospital without leaving Ames.

“Ivy is a great place to get a healthcare management degree because of our partnership with local hospitals,” said Natallia Gray, associate teaching professor of management who is also the healthcare management program director. “While we don’t have a medical school or hospital on campus, we are collaborating with outstanding hospitals with nationwide reputations for providing high-quality, cost-effective healthcare services located in Ames and Des Moines.”

The partnership is good for UnityPoint Health-Des Moines, too.

“This provides opportunities for students to see the many different aspects of caring for patients and also shows them a wide range of career paths available in healthcare,” said Joyce McDanel, vice president of human resources and education at UnityPoint Health-Des Moines.

During internships, students work on real projects, help solve real business solutions, and get an idea of what it’s like to work in the healthcare field.
