Winners and nominees announced for 2023
Dean’s Student Leadership Award
The first award winner is Morgan Hawkins, who recently graduated summa cum laude from the Iowa State University Honors Program. She obtained degrees in management and entrepreneurship and a minor in psychology. Hawkins received the Dean’s Student Leadership Award, intended for students who model extensive leadership beyond a single department or student organization while demonstrating this leadership in a significant university, community, or professional organization.
Her leadership has been demonstrated in multiple ways. She served as the inaugural president of the Sigma Nu Tau entrepreneurship honor society and vice president of the Ivy Student Council and held various positions for the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women. Additionally, Hawkins has been a part of the university’s Academic Standards Committee, Student Advisory Board, and the Fall Planning Executive Committee while being a sorority and fraternity community ambassador and Honors Program section leader. Her involvement in the Iowa State community has been nothing short of inspirational. One of her nominators wrote, “Morgan is a true inspiration to other students at Iowa State University, and her leadership and dedication have improved student well-being and campus climate and created a more inclusive campus community.”
Hawkins recently accepted a management position as a sales district leader with PepsiCo in Kansas City, Missouri, where she will continue demonstrating her leadership skills and inspiring those around her. Reflecting on her time at Iowa State, Morgan wrote, “I feel the Ivy College of Business has prepared me for any challenge this new role may throw my way. I’m thankful for all of the help, guidance, and endless support provided by the dean and many other faculty, staff, and students within the college. I wouldn’t have been as successful or involved as I was without Ivy!”
Dean’s Student Inspiration Award
The second award winner is Edith Barton, who received the Dean’s Student Inspiration Award. Created in 2018, this award recognizes seniors who have been an inspiration to members of the college or the community. This remarkable student inspires others through academics, community involvement, or overcoming obstacles.
Barton has been an inspiration to the Iowa State community and beyond during her time here. In a note from her nominator, she was described as “a resource and a wealth of knowledge for the Collegiate Women in Business with continuous improvement in programming, development, and training.” Her outreach was further admired in a nominator’s statement: “Edith’s involvement in several student organizations has developed her inspirational spirit through the Supply Chain Club, WE Lead, ISCORE 2020 Scholar, Multicultural Business Network, and APEX Scholar.” Her involvement also includes participation in Science Bound Iowa, Iowa State’s pre-college-through-college program designed to meet our state and national need for a diverse, highly-trained workforce by increasing the number of ethnically and racially diverse Iowa youth who pursue degrees and careers in the fields of agriculture, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (ASTEM), as well as education. This involvement has also allowed her to inspire youth, working with middle and high school students across Iowa.
She graduated with degrees in supply chain management and entrepreneurship. Following her graduation from Iowa State, she will work as a supply chain analyst for Collins Aerospace, where she interned in the summer of 2022. Barton describes herself as having a “drive for leadership and collaborative relationship building through real-world exploration of logistics, supply chain, entrepreneurship, and the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.”
We would also like to recognize all of the Ivy students who were nominated for these awards: Zayna Bardawil, Madison Benson, Brooke Boddicker, Emma Geneser, Becca Hoefer, Dan Nelson, Hannah Pento, Aaron Randak, Bela Reis, Marissa Robinson, and Emma Sarver.
The Office of the Dean selected the award winners. The recipients received a medallion during a special presentation with Dean Spalding and were recognized during the college convocation ceremony on May 12.
