Student internship series
Students at the Debbie and Jerry Ivy College of Business learn early in their college career the added value of having an internship before graduation.
This summer, Ivy students are engaging in a wide range of internships to add real-world experience to their resumes before they graduate. Meet Aiden Yauchler, a senior who shared why a summer internship added value to his education.
Yauchler, from Waukesha, Wisconsin, studying marketing and supply chain management, has spent his summer as a supply chain and inventory control intern with Perlick Corporation in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
This position requires Yauchler to work with two different departments within the company: purchasing and inventory management. On the purchasing side, he has worked with the team on a variety of different cost-saving and supplier evaluation projects, allowing him to expand his knowledge on the financial side of supply chain management. On the inventory management side, he has spent time investigating root causes for different inventory discrepancies and helped improve the current shop floor storage situation. Yauchler also had the opportunity to take the lead on a cost-savings project centered around PPE (personal protection equipment), which he was able to present to the manufacturing space’s area managers and production supervisors.
“Even if you struggle to find a position in your first year, putting yourself out there will help build beneficial connections and can lead to more doors being opened in the future.”
— Aiden Yauchler
Yauchler started as a marketing major at Ivy because he has always enjoyed the thought process behind consumer behavior and saw marketing as a great way to further develop his understanding of the topic. The multitude of areas within the marketing world was another draw due to the variety of courses that allow students to continue to learn new and exciting information each year. However, after taking Supply Chain Management 3010 with Rob Overstreet, assistant professor, Yauchler decided to add a second major in supply chain management.
“Everything about the supply chain space is very interesting and exciting to me,” said Yauchler. “I love learning about how much of our everyday world is impacted by supply chains, and developing my knowledge around the topic has been a very fun experience so far.”
Supply Chain Management 4530: Supply Chain Planning and Control with Frank Montabon, Dean’s Professor in Supply Chain Management, provided Yauchler with a strong knowledge base of supply chain planning and control allowing him to hit the ground running when his internship started. Yauchler also credits Mike Gassmann, associate professor of practice in marketing, with helping him grow his interpersonal skills and building his confidence, and his internship with Ivy’s marketing and communications team for helping develop his experience in a team-based environment.
To students planning to pursue an internship, Yauchler recommends they apply as early as possible. Internships are the best form of professional preparation a student can accumulate during their time in college and it can often make for some incredibly exciting and valuable experiences. “Even if you struggle to find a position in your first year, putting yourself out there will help build beneficial connections and can lead to more doors being opened in the future.”
