Student internship series

Students at the Debbie and Jerry Ivy College of Business learn early in their college career the added value of having an internship before graduation.

This summer, Ivy students are engaging in a wide range of internships to add real-world experience to their resumes before they graduate. Meet Ethan Edwards, who shared why a summer internship added value to his education.

Edwards, a junior from Omaha, Nebraska, studying business analytics, spent his summer as a search strategy analyst with Eggers Executive Search in Omaha, Nebraska.

Always having a passion for the stories behind data, specifically in sports, Edwards decided to study business analytics. He realized that he could translate this passion into the business world and leverage data for decision-making in this growing career field.

As a search strategy analyst, Edwards’ responsibilities include cleaning, visualizing, and analyzing the firm’s historical data to maximize recruiting strategies, while also searching for qualified candidates and banks in regions across the country for the firm’s recruiters to build relationships with. In his position, Edwards gets to learn and gain experience by working on and presenting projects to key decision-makers of the firm.

“Start building professional habits now, as they will show through your application, interview, and time as an intern.”

Edwards learned of this position through a friend from high school, who held the position previously but had to resign. His friend recommended him. Both Edwards and his friend studied business analytics and after learning more about the company, Edwards knew this position would be a good fit. Since Eggers Executive Search has only 10 employees, there is a family-like culture that makes him feel welcomed immediately. He had the satisfaction of knowing that his work was important and appreciated every day.

“This opportunity was a great reminder to always build relationships and grow my network,” said Edwards.

To land this position, Edwards leaned on personal and professional skills gained from his time as an Ivy College of Business peer mentor in BUSAD 1020. He also credits Ivy’s Business Career Services staff with providing him with the resources and help to be the best version of himself in the professional career market. From interview help to the career search, the career services team has been a crucial piece to his success.

Edwards’ advice to others pursuing an internship, “Start building professional habits now, as they will show through your application, interview, and time as an intern.”
