Student Spotlight
Haley Paluzzi is a PhD candidate specializing in supply chain management. Prior to joining Iowa State University in 2020, Paluzzi received her bachelor of science degree from the Colorado School of Mines in metallurgical and materials engineering and an MBA from the University of California, Riverside. Paluzzi has five years of industry experience, working as a senior metallurgical engineer and logistics analyst in the steel industry. Her research interests include consumer impatience, consumer-centric supply chain management, e-commerce, and omni-channel fulfillment. She is also interested in the development of logistics capabilities and supply chain sustainability.
Q: Why did you decide to get a PhD in supply chain management?
After a few years of working in industry as an engineer, I took on a role with my company that was heavily related to supply chain management. At the same time, I began working on my MBA and focused on taking courses in supply chain management. A combination of enjoying the work that I was doing and loving the classes I was taking led me to decide to pursue a PhD in supply chain management.
Q: How did you choose the Ivy College of Business? Please share any specific points that helped you decide.
I chose the Ivy College of Business for several reasons. I grew up near Iowa State and knew that it has a strong college of business and that its supply chain program is one of the best in the country. When looking further into the supply chain program within the Ivy College of Business, I was excited to see that the research interests of the faculty aligned with my own research interests. After applying to the PhD program, I visited the Ivy College of Business for the first time. A combination of the welcoming faculty, beautiful Iowa State campus, and growing college of business convinced me that Ivy was the right choice for me.
Q: What types of research are you most interested in?
Research topics that I am interested in include consumer-centric supply chains, supply chain sustainability and the advancement of the circular economy, and the development of logistics capabilities related to ecommerce and omni channel fulfillment. My primary methodological research interests are related to experimental design and the application of choice-based conjoint analyses.
Q: Would you encourage future PhD students to apply at Ivy? Please explain why.
Yes! I have had a great experience at Ivy due to the academic and research support I have received throughout my time in the PhD program. All faculty members I have worked with have been extremely encouraging, and the PhD program is set up to support learning, generate high-quality research, and develop PhD students to be future faculty members.
Q: What is your dream job after you complete your PhD?
After completing my PhD, I hope to get a job as a faculty member at a research university.
