Student success in human resource management
Four business students graduated with their professional certification in human resource management, for the second year in a row.
Payten Page, Quinn Haftl, Gabriel Rodriguez-Arroyo, and Molly Berte each earned the Society of Human Resource Management Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) credential, setting them apart from the rest of the spring 2024 Ivy College of Business graduating class.
The SHRM-CP credential is an opportunity for students to be recognized experts and leaders in the human resource field. Classes offered in human resource management provide students with the knowledge needed for this credential, but these skills must be demonstrated through the SHRM exam.
Haftl and Berte decided to pursue the SHRM-CP credential as a natural progression of the human resource learning journey to prepare for the professional world.
However, Page pursued it because, “I wanted to challenge myself to master the HR competencies necessary to be a successful HR professional and the certification is a further endorsement of the skills I learned at the Ivy College of Business.”
To prepare for the exam, Page followed a self-study program, while Haftl, Rodriguez-Arroyo, and Berte joined a study group led by Robert Olinger, assistant teaching professor of management.
“The study group is an opportunity for students to practice retrieving information they have been introduced to during their coursework,” said Olinger. “If there is a topic that the students struggle with, we discuss it and help each other learn more.”
Each student demonstrated their skills, determination, and hard work by passing the exam.
Page chose to return to Iowa State University to earn her human resource management degree after years of hands-on experience in human resources and operations management. She chose Iowa State for the opportunity to obtain a degree with emphasis on human resource management. The instructors at the Ivy College of Business that Page interacted with throughout her degree were experts in their fields, further solidifying that Iowa State was the right choice. After earning her degree in human resource management and the SHRM-CP credential, Page is now assisting with operations of a nonprofit focused on safety and compliance in the construction industry.
Originally, Berte started at Iowa State as a management major, but after taking a human resource focused class, she quickly realized that she preferred human resources and felt the coursework was very applicable to the workplace. In May, Berte graduated with a bachelor of science in human resource management and business management with a minor in public relations, then started as a human resource coordinator at Aperture Pet & Life.
Haftl chose to pursue a degree in human resource management because, “I am a people person and I love socializing with new people daily.” The summer following graduation, Haftl continued as a human resource talent acquisition intern with Casey’s and was hired as an associate talent acquisition specialist.
After graduating with a degree in human resource management and international business, Rodriguez-Arroyo started as an associate recruiter at GForce Life Services in Chicago, Illinois.
